just following the white line. The rain drizzles down,
A fine mist against the gray sky.
My feet pound against the track
My heart beats hard in my chest
Each breath rattling through my lungs
Each stride wrenching at my legs
Reminder of a life once fun-filled
Free from the weight of books
The heavy chains of assessments
The binding locks of piling work
A past that seems so far behind
But today, I run
Against a blowing wind
Away from the creeping shadows
But never escaping.
Just following the white line.
